The truly awful record that Sheffield Wednesday won’t break this season

Darren Moore’s Owls picked up a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town earlier this week to avoid equalling their worst ever losing streak, a record that was set in 2000 when they lost eight games on the bounce following relegation from the Premier League.
But that was the only real positive, because it still left Moore waiting for his first win as Wednesday manager, and Birmingham City’s win meant that SWFC are now nine points off safety with just 10 games to go.

Hide AdThis season has been one of the worst in Wednesday’s history, and certainly one of the worst in recent memory, but there’s a record that they won’t be breaking this season that proves that things can certainly get worse.
You see back in January 1975, Wednesday were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United in the Second Division on the way to being relegated into the third tier, and fans had to wait until September before seeing their team win again in the league.
In total it was 20 games without a win, a club record that stands to this day as their worst ever run, and it ultimately cost Steve Burtenshaw his job. It seems pretty remarkable nowadays that he lasted as long as he did.
For this group of players, as relegation into League One looks more and more likely, the worst it could get is 18 without a win this season, but Moore will be absolutely desperate to halt their dreadful form as soon as possible – ideally against Barnsley tomorrow afternoon.
