Sheffield Council is planning to extend the historic Hillsborough Library, in Hillsborough Park, and improve the toilets.

The site, previously known as Hillsborough House, was built in 1779 and remained a home for 124 years until it became a library in 1906.

Now, the council is planning to upgrade the site with a new rear entrance lobby connecting the children’s library and main library, improved toilets, a new reception area and repaired walls.

In a statement, agents Castle Owen, on behalf of the local authority, said: “The proposal to construct a new rear entrance lobby will be designed to provide much needed toilet provision and to improve accessibility into both the main and children’s library.

“The new building has been designed in response to, and so that it does not detract from, the historic, Grade II listed library which is located within Hillsborough Park.

“By careful positioning, scaling, design and choice of materials it is hoped that this structure will be an important, aesthetic addition for the local community and wider area.”

There were also projects improving the Bowling Pavilion and Bradbury Makers Shed.

The charity said the Bowling Pavilion has a mixture of performing arts activities such as singing, dancing, theatre and physical activities such as yoga, pilates and chair-based exercises.

The Makers Shed, formerly known as the Potting Shed, hosts creative arts activities including gardening, photography, woodwork and storytelling.
