More than six decades after sharing their first kiss on a blind date in Sheffield, a loving couple have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Gordon and Sheila Frith were set up on a date at Woodseats Working Men’s Club in the late 1950s and Cupid struck immediately. They got engaged in 1960, tied the knot two years later at St Thomas Church, in Sheffield, and 60 years on remain happily married.

Gordon and Sheila marked the milestone with a surprise afternoon tea organised by staff at Springbank House Care Home, on Ashgate Road, in Chesterfield, where Sheila, aged 81, now lives and 82-year-old Gordon visits her regularly. They tucked into a specially made cake decorated with a photo of them cutting their wedding cake in 1962, alongside other treats.

They also received a congratulatory card from King Charles III. Gordon said: “Thank you to all the staff for celebrating 60 years of a beautiful marriage to my darling wife.”

After getting married and spending their honeymoon in London, the couple moved to Hasland, where they raised their daughters, Helen and Catherine. Gordon worked for the coal board, as a motor mechanic, and Sheila spent 10 years as a secretary followed by 17 years as a cleaner at a Derbyshire care home, before retiring in 2005.

Michelle Waddington, home manager at Springbank House Care Home, said: “We were delighted to put on a special spread to congratulate Gordon and Sheila on their amazing diamond wedding anniversary. Sixty years married is an incredible milestone and we feel honoured we were able to share it with such a lovely couple. Congratulations again to Gordon and Sheila.”
