As a man comes to terms with the life-changing injuries he suffered during the latest shooting on Sheffield’s streets this week, here are the details of every incident of gun crime we have reported on since last year.

The 42-year-old man suffered the injuries during an incident on Malton Street in the Burngreave/Pitsmoor area of the city on Sunday, July 2, 2023.

The Star has now reported on nine shootings this year, which means the equivalent of one shooting every three weeks has happened on the streets of Sheffield in 2023.

South Yorkshire Police previously told The Star that the force had responded to what Detective Superintendent Paul Murphy described as a ‘slight increase’ in firearms discharges in early 2021 by setting up an ‘armed crime team’.

Det Supt Murphy said the operation was predicated on the ‘increase in violence and firearms discharges which predominantly do link to the drugs trade’ and organised crime groups, and has so far resulted in the conviction of more than 27 criminals.

Sunday, July 2, 2023: Man suffers life-changing injuries in ‘targeted attack’

Officers from South Yorkshire Police were called at 10.11pm on Sunday, July 2, 2023 to reports of a man suffering serious injuries.

The victim, a 42-year-old-man, is believed to have got out of his car on Malton Street, in the Burngreave/Pitsmoor area, and within moments been shot in the leg, in what police believe to be a targeted attack.

Detective Inspector Chris Ronayne, senior investigating officer, said: “Our officers are now carrying out extensive enquiries in the Burngreave area and we want to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious between 9pm and 11pm last night on Malton Street.

“I'm also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen an orange Mini Cooper in the area around the same time or may have relevant dash cam footage. The Mini was found at around 10.49pm on fire in a wooded area off Grimesthorpe Road and may be connected to the incident.”

Thursday, June 29, 2023: Gunman opens fire on Sheffield property in early-morning shooting

At around 1.40am on Thursday, June 29, 2023, police were called to Washington Road in the Sharrow area of Sheffield, following reports that damage had been caused to the door of a property.

A SYP spokesperson said: “It is suspected that the damage was caused by a firearm and an investigation is underway. Nobody was injured during the incident.

“The local community will see an increased police presence while enquiries are carried out and detectives are keen to hear from anyone living in the area who may have seen or heard something suspicious between 1-2am.”

Speaking shortly after the incident, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said the suspects are believed to have fled the scene in a black Ford Kuga which was later found burnt out on Holgate Road. The force said no one had been injured and no one had yet been arrested.

Police have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information or CCTV or dash cam footage which could help with the investigation to get in touch. Sunday, April 29, 2023: Police called over suspected shooting in Heeley after bang is heard during altercation

An altercation reportedly broke out between two groups of men near the Heeley Bank Antique Centre on Queens Road, close to the junction with London Road, and a bang was heard by witnesses, which they believed to have been a firearm discharge.

People in the area reported seeing armed police on the street after officers were called to the scene at around 10pm on Saturday, April 29, 2023, while the police helicopter could be heard overhead for some time.

South Yorkshire Police said officers had attended the scene but by the time they arrived the two groups had left the area and no evidence of a firearm discharge could be found. A spokesperson for the force added: “CCTV and footage checks are now being conducted, and witnesses are being spoken to in order to establish exactly what happened.”

Sunday, April 9, 2023: Man aged 25 dies after being shot once

A man in his 20s was shot dead on Callow Drive, Gleadless Valley, at around 1.30am on Sunday, April 9, 2023. Medics battled at the scene to save the seriously injured man but he was pronounced dead at the scene, triggering a murder probe. Much of the police activity yesterday morning was centred around the Newfield block of flats.

Wednesday, March 8, 2023: Boy, 15, shot in the leg

A boy, aged 15, was shot in the leg in an incident at Teynham Road, near Shirecliffe, on Wednesday, March 8. Police were called to the scene at around 7.13pm.

Tuesday, February 28, 2023: Firearm discharged in Upperthorpe

Two people were arresred in connection with a reported firearms discharge in the Springvale Walk area of Upperthorpe.

Police were called at 6.08pm on Tuesday, February 28 following reports that shots had been fired. Nobody was injured during the incident.

Two men, aged 47 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Both were bailed pending further enquiries.

Thursday, January 26, 2023: Two shootings on Sheffield streets within 13 minutes of each other

Around 13 minutes later, officers were called to another report of shots fired at a vehicle, a Volkswagen Passat, on Machon Bank, Nether Edge which was left damaged.

A spokesperson for the force said ‘no-one was injured in either incident’

Monday, August 8, 2022: Man shot on Beaumont Mews, Manor

Emergency services were called to Beaumont Mews, in the Manor area, at around 2.40pm on Monday, August 8, 2022, to reports of an assault. They found a 45-year-old man with a suspected gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.

Defendants Gareth Houldon, Luke Duncan, John Smedley, James Roberts and Mark Smith all admitted to criminal offences relating to the violent attack, which was carried out in a car port connected to Houldon’s home on Beaumont Mews, Manor, on August 8, 2022, while Houlden’s partner and children were present.

Sentencing the five defendants, Judge Rachael Harrison said immediate custody was ‘unavoidable’ for all five defendants and sentenced Roberts to 19 months in prison; Smith received a 21-month jail sentence and Smedley was sentenced to 25 months’ immediate custody.

Roberts, Smith and Smedley were all jailed when the case was opened on May 5, 2023.

The sentence was delayed in the case of Duncan and Smedley due to the former needing further reports to be prepared, and the latter needing other matters to be dealt with.

Duncan was jailed for 52 months during a hearing held on May 18, while Houlden received a sentence of nine years, five months during a June 9 hearing.

Houldon was also sentenced for additional offences relating to Houldon possessing the firearm used on the complainant and an ammunition charge, along with offences relating to the supply of the illegal Class A drugs, heroin and crack cocaine. Houldon pleaded guilty to all of the charges he faced at earlier hearings.

Sunday, July 24, 2022: Shooting on Rotherham Road, Killamarsh

Police launched an investigation after gunshots were heard near Rotherham Road in Killamarsh in the early hours of Sunday, July 24, 2022. Derbyshire Police were called to the area at around 1.50am on Sunday, July 24, after members of the public reported hearing gunshots 25 minutes earlier.

Friday, July 15, 2022: White Thorns Drive, Batemoor

Violence flared on White Thorns Drive in Batemoor, Sheffield, on the evening of Friday, July 15, 2022, with police called to the scene at around 7pm after receiving reports that a man had been shot. The force subsequently confirmed that two men had been injured during the incident, one of whom suffered ‘life-altering injuries’.

Friday, April 22, 2022: Shots fired at Cumberland Head Hotel on High Street, Beighton

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said at the time: “An investigation is underway after a reported firearm discharge in Beighton, Sheffield, on Friday, April 22, 2022.

“At 6.35pm, callers reported that shots had been fired towards the Cumberland Head Hotel on High Street. There was damage caused to the windows which was consistent with a firearm being discharged. Nobody was injured. “Detectives are now carrying out numerous enquiries, including reviewing CCTV footage, in order to identify and trace the offenders and the vehicle involved.”

Thursday, March 18, 2022: Driver shot at while travelling near to junction of Boston Street and London Road in Highfield

A man was reportedly shot while he was driving a black Kia Rio at the junction of London Road and Boston Street at around 2.30pm on Thursday, March 18, 2022. He then drove to the car park of Waitrose off St Mary’s Gate, where he called 999 and was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Officers arrested a 36-year-old London man who was detained in Essex. Call police on 101 quoting incident number 528 of March 18, 2022.

Tuesday, March 22, 2022: Man shot dead at Burngreave car wash

Lamar Leroy Griffiths was sat in his friend’s car at the Diamond hand car wash in Burngreave on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 when a gun was fired at the BMW. Bullets penetrated the windscreen and 21-year-old Lamar was fatally wounded. Nobody has been charged with Lamar’s murder.

Lamar’s mum, Monique Bate, said he was on his way to visit his grandmother on the day of the attack and was not the intended target of the bullet which claimed his life.

Monday, February 7, 2022: 20-year-old man shot on Ecclesall Road

Police were called to Ecclesall Road at around 1.40am on Monday, February 7, 2022 to reports that a 20-year-old man had been shot.

The man is believed to have been travelling down the road in a black Lamborghini, when shots were fired towards the vehicle. He is understood to have fled the scene, travelling towards Whirlow, and arrived at Whirlowdale Road, Whirlow, a short time later where he got out of the Lamborghini and got into a white Rolls Royce, which had two others in the vehicle.

Qamar Nain, 26, St Stephen’s Road, Eastwood, in Rotherham has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the incident and denied the offence. His case is due to be heard at Sheffield Crown Court this year.
