Bomb squad identifies device which triggered evacuation in South Yorkshire

The army’s specialist bomb squad was called following the discovery of the device in a property on Cliff Road, Darfield, Barnsley, yesterday afternoon.
As a precaution, until the bomb experts arrived at the house, a cordon was put in place and residents from nearby homes were evacuated.

Hide AdAn examination of the device later established that it was a replica grenade and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
The device was given to police officers by the current occupant of a house visited as part of routine enquiries to try to find an outstanding suspect wanted for questioning by South Yorkshire Police.
When the alarm was raised, Cliff Road was immediately sealed off to traffic and pedestrians and all emergency services were alerted to the discovery.
