It may have been one of the worst-kept secrets in cricket history, but that hardly dampened the fanfare that greeeted Joe Root's appointment as England captain earlier today.

The 26-year-old Sheffield Collegiate product has been groomed for the top job since taking over as vice-captain of the Test side in 2015, and was officially confirmed as Alastair Cook's successor this morning. Here is how the cricket world reacted on Twitter.
