Pioneering prostate treatment: The Yorkshire Clinic is first in the north to offer ‘game changing’ therapy

The misery of an enlarged prostate and fears over potential side effects of some treatments could be over with this pioneering new procedure.

A Yorkshire hospital is the first in the north to offer this ‘game-changing’ robotic prostate treatment, which is less invasive than conventional procedures and with less risk of side effects*

The Yorkshire Clinic part of Ramsay Health Care, says that men suffering from a benign enlarged prostate or BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) will be able to receive robotic Aquablation therapy at their Bingley hospital.

Clinical studies* have shown that Aquablation therapy offers significant symptom relief and low rates of irreversible complications, across prostates of all sizes and shapes. It is a treatment offered to those with benign (non-cancerous) Prostatic Hyperplasia – an enlarged prostate and the benefits can include:

-        An Improvement in the BPH Symptom Score

-        An Improved Flow of urine

-        This technology may reduce the risk of incontinence and loss of sexual function when compared to other techniques.

What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?

It is thought 3 million men in the UK have lower urinary tract symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). When the prostate becomes enlarged it can press on the urinary tract making it difficult to pass water and can lead to bladder and kidney complications.

Around 35,000 men in the UK will need surgical intervention for this condition, but although the surgery offered can be effective in relieving symptoms, there are many recognised complications, say The Yorkshire Clinic, including incontinence, erectile or ejaculatory dysfunction.

What to expect

With seven surgeons working to bring this treatment to the clinic, you can expect top class treatment and professionalism. The procedure itself lasts around 40 minutes, is minimally invasive, and will require just a few hours in hospital afterwards for observation. The type of treatment ensures surgeons can make very precise movements during surgery.

The surgeon will create a personalised treatment plan, depending on the size and shape of your prostate. This procedure allows them to identify parts which maintain sexual function and continence and ensure they are left untouched whilst the robotically-controlled heat-free waterjet removes the extraneous prostate tissue using incredible precision.

What the surgeons say

Consultant Urologist, Mr Omer Baldo, is one of the seven surgeons involved.

“Aquablation therapy is a game-changer for patients with enlarged prostates.”

The utilisation of heat-free water power results in improved urinary symptoms, and whilst we cannot eliminate all complications, the risk of urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction is significantly reduced.

“I am proud that we can now offer this state-of-the-art robotic treatment to our patients in West Yorkshire and from further afield,” said Mr Alistair Stewart Consultant Urologist, another of the seven surgeons involved.
