Brits vote for their best and worst desserts ... what tops the list

Brits love desserts. From sticky toffee pudding to mince pies, we have perfected the craft of dessert making over the years to satisfy our sweet tooth. With the recent events that force us to stay at home, we can find comfort in our favourite sweet treats, writes Sue Wilkinson. However, there is one question that can either unite or break us: what are the best British desserts? In order to put an end to this dilemma, the dessert experts at Jackandbeyond.com made a survey which asked 1,788 Brits what their preferences are.Is your favourite on top, or are you about to be fuming? Unbelievably Eton mess – the luxurious mix of meringue, cream and strawberries finds itself in the low tier between treacle tart and spotted dick. Rice pudding was voted bland. In my experience it depends who makes it and how. My paternal grandmother made a rice pudding – with evaporated milk – every day and it was richly, gloriously creamy and gorgeous. These are the GOD tier British desserts, as voted by you. When it comes to the second row of favourites, the TOP tier desserts as voted by Brits are the quintessential British Victoria Sponge, brownies, the very well-baked bakewell tart, and the not so British but still much-loved eclairs. GOOD tier is led by cheesecake followed by Madeira cake, marble cake and Swiss roll. MID tier is chocolate mousse, bread and butter pudding, arctic roll and apple crumble.Treacle tart, Eton mess, spotted dick and egg custard have been put in the LOW tier – and none of which I would swap English trifle for – it finds itself in the BLAND tier. Joining it is rice pudding, carrot cake and – again astoundingly – banoffee pie. What’s not to love about bananas, sticky toffee, buttery base and thick, whipped cream.We have talked the best, now it is time to reveal the worst (as voted by you). In conclusion, Brits may love Christmas but are not fans of festive desserts.I loved my maternal grandmother’s mince pies.
