Tragedy as man dies in Barnsley car crash and woman is seriously injured

A man has died and a woman has been seriously injured following a collision in Barnsley.

Emergency services responded to reports of a collision on Wakefield Road, Athersley, Barnsley, at 10am on Wednesday involving a black Ford CMax. They discovered the driver of the car - an 87-year-old man - in cardiac arrest. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, an 87-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. Roads policing officers investigating the incident are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage.

South Yorkshire Police said: “On October 13 at 10am, emergency services responded to reports of a road traffic collision on Wakefield Road in Athersely involving a black Ford CMax. Upon officers’ arrival, the driver, an 87-year-old man was found in cardiac arrest and despite the efforts of the emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, an 87 year-old woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.”
