A drive-in cinema is coming to Sheffield’s Don Valley Bowl – screening classic films and a new snooker movie shot at the Crucible
and live on Freeview channel 276
Films will be shown at the open-air venue on August 22 and 23, including the new independent production Break, Disney animation Up, Black Beauty starring Sean Bean, Dolittle with Robert Downy Jr, the classic musical Grease, Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Billed as ‘Rocky with a snooker cue’, Break was filmed at the Crucible – home of the World Snooker Championship – as well as locations in London and Beijing. It follows the story of 'troubled but talented' petty criminal Spencer Pryde, portrayed by Sam Gittins, who is given the chance to turn his life around through the sport. The late Rutger Hauer, best known for his part in Blade Runner, also appears in his final screen role.

Former Hollyoaks actor Terri Dwyer, who produced Break, said: “We didn’t know when or where we could release our film. After 10 years of hard work we wanted to give the film a release it deserved. We had to be in Sheffield to coincide with the World Snooker Finals and we thought an open-air drive-in at Don Valley would be the perfect place to host our event.”
Audience members will be able to order refreshments online to be delivered directly to their vehicle. Toilet facilities will be available and each film’s sound will be broadcast via an FM transmitter that can be tuned into via a standard car radio.
It comes after city firm Village Green Events organised a well-attended 'drive-thru’ cinema in the grounds of the Kenwood Hall Hotel & Spa in Nether Edge.
