Nigel Jemson, who played alongside Hirst for much of his three-year Owls career in the early 1990s, was speaking about his career on chart-topping podcast Under The Cosh.
And he said Hirst, who scored 149 Wednesday goals in a career stuttered by injuries, could have been better than all-time leading Premier League goalscorer Alan Shearer.

“I actually think, though, that if David Hirst had been clear of injuries, he’d have been better than Shearer.
“That was the main reason I went to Sheffield Wednesday, to play up front with David Hirst. He had power, he scored goals, he was quick, he was strong. One hell of a player.”
Jemson signed for the Owls in 1991 from Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest and played 51 league matches for the Owls.

“I knew at the time it was a good career move for me. I didn’t really want to leave Forest at the time, but with what happened with the Cup Final, it was still there.
“It was a great opportunity and I thought Trevor [Francis] would help me further my career.”
