Sheffield Wednesday legend Carlton Palmer offers scathing assessment of outgoing man

That’s the message of Sheffield Wednesday icon Carlton Palmer speaking after no fewer than 10 senior players were confirmed to be on their way out at the end of their current contracts.
Tom Lees, Adam Reach, Joey Pelupessy and Jordan Rhodes are among those heading to pastures new.

Hide AdBut asked of the decision to let two-time Owls player of the year Keiren Westwood go, Palmer suggested it was high time the former Republic of Ireland man left the club, who he accused of ‘living off past reputations’.
“Darren [Moore] would have assessed it,” he told Transfer Tavern. “I think there are a lot of players who have been at the club now for quite a while living off past reputations and resting on their laurels, and Keiren’s certainly one of them.
“He’s definitely been a good servant to the club, but I believe it’s time for him to move on.
“Even with all those off-field problems that they had, that squad of Sheffield Wednesday players should not have got relegated.”

Hide AdWestwood played 199 competitive games for Wednesday having joined on a free transfer from Sunderland in 2014. A fan favourite, he found himself in and out of the team in recent seasons.
The 35-year-old has insisted retirement is not something he has considered. Speaking to The Star earlier this year he said: “The fact is that I’m gong to try and play as long as I possibly can, every goalkeeper will say that.
“Ultimately at the moment, life after football is not a priority.”
