Sheffield train derailment: what happened and which services are disrupted after a freight train came off the tracks at Sheffield station
A freight train has derailed in Sheffield causing widespread disruption to services in the north of England.
Northern Rail has said trains may be cancelled, diverted or delayed as a result of the incident and passengers are advised not to travel due to the number of routes affected.

How did the train derailment happen?
The freight train came off the tracks north of Sheffield train station at about 3am this morning, in what was a “low speed derailment” according to Northern Rail.
The incident resulted in a number of platforms being blocked at the station.

Hide AdBritish Transport Police said no one had been injured in the incident.
In a statement, it said: “Officers were called to Sheffield railway station following a freight train derailment this morning.
“No one has been injured. We are working with our industry partners to investigate the circumstances of the incident.”
Which train services have been affected?
The incident has resulted in major disruption to services, with routes run by CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Northern and Transpennine Express impacted.

The following services have been affected, according to National Rail’s website:
Northern Rail
Northern Rail has advised passengers not to travel due to the lack of alternative transport available and the number of routes affected.
The Northern lines between Scarborough, Hull, Manchester Piccadilly, Huddersfield, Lincoln Central, Barnsley and Sheffield, and also between Retford and Nottingham, have been impacted.

Leeds - Nottingham (a limited service will run) Leeds - Sheffield via Barnsley (will run between Leeds and Meadowhall) Leeds - Sheffield via Moorthorpe (will run between Leeds and Meadowhall) Sheffield - Huddersfield (will run between Barnsley and Huddersfield) Sheffield - Lincoln (cancelled throughout and replaced by road transport) Sheffield - Scarborough (will run between Doncaster and Scarborough) Sheffield - Doncaster (cancelled throughout) Sheffield - York (cancelled throughout) Sheffield - Manchester (will run as scheduled)
Train tickets can be used on the Supertram between Sheffield and Meadowhall or Parkgate.
Cross Country
Cross Country said trains can now run via Sheffield, but they may still be delayed due to congestion.

Hide AdThe affected CrossCountry routes are between Plymouth and Edinburgh/Glasgow Central/Aberdeen, and also between Penzance and Newcastle.
Tickets can be used on:
East Midlands Railway services between Derby and Sheffield and also between Leeds and Wakefield Westgate Northern via any reasonable route TransPennine Express via any reasonable route.
East Midlands Railway
East Midlands Railway services between London St Pancras International and Sheffield/Leeds, and between Norwich and Liverpool Lime Street have been affected.
Trains between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich are now able to call at Sheffield.

East Midlands Railway has advised travelling later in the day if possible to allow for social distancing on board buses.
