New Hermes 'mega hub' in South Yorkshire could create 2,000 new jobs

Plans have been lodged with Barnsley Council by Cushman & Wakefield, on behalf of Newlands Developments, which would see a 'mixed use development' as well as a new link road with a roundabout built on land that was formerly a colliery, west of Sheffield Road in Hoyland.
The application also incorporates 298,700sqft of warehousing, a three storey office block, parking spaces for 650 cars, 595 HGVs, 150 tractors and 60 cycle storage spaces.

Hide AdThe new link road is proposed to connect with the existing roads at BirdwellRoundabout to the north, Tankersley Lane to the west and Sheffield Road to the south.
The design and access statement outlines plans for the site, stating the plans will: "Create a sustainable, high-quality development on the western edge of Hoyland, providing a pleasant environment in which to work.
"The employment development would deliver 49ha of offices, general industry, warehousing and distribution units, along with associated infrastructure.
"The proposed link road will connect Hoyland West to the strategic road network, while providing additional benefit to existing Hoyland residents and businesses by reducing traffic along Sheffield Road."

Hide AdThe application estimates that more than 2,000 new jobs will be created in total, with 800 jobs generated at the Hermes distribution centre.
Currently, Hermes has two parcel hubs and 28 depots, 18,000 couriers and 3,700 employees.
The application states that the new Hermes 'Mega hub’ proposed would generate £41 million in investment plus a 20 year lease commitment.
Planning documents state: "The proposals will generate up to 800 jobs with 500 permanent employee contracts. Of these, there will be a number of a number of management staff with pay grades of between £23K-£80K.
