The shop, on Manchester Road next to the Crosspool Tavern, was for many years Motor World. When it closed in 2015, it was rebranded as the Pop-Up shop but the building was demolished last year.
Developers originally wanted to build six apartments but have now reduced this to five, which will be in two blocks - each three storeys high - facing the adjacent community garden. Parking on site is also included.

"The loss of the existing retail use would not compromise this. The pre-application view from the council is that there would not be significant impact on the provision of services in Crosspool and the sustainability of the centre would not be seriously undermined by the scheme.
"The site is significantly separated from the rest of the centre, both physically and functionally, by the A57."
They also say housing on this site is acceptable. "The buildings are a similar mass and height to the nearest building, the Crosspool Tavern.

Planning officers are still considering the application.
