Tribute to police officer and ‘treasured son’ killed in Sheffield crash one year ago today

PC Matt Lannie, a traffic officer, was responding to an emergency call when his police motorbike was involved in a collision with a Toyota Avensis, driven by a 64-year-old man, on Nether Lane, Ecclesfield, on April 21, 2020.
The officer was responding to reports of a silver BMW failing to stop for officers at the time of the crash.

Hide AdAs a mark of respect to the officer, South Yorkshire Police Federation posted his photograph on its Facebook page and said: “Remembering PC Matt Lannie, of South Yorkshire Police, who died on duty one year ago today.”
PC Lannie, a treasured son, partner and friend, joined South Yorkshire Police in 2012, working in Sheffield as a response officer.
In 2017, he transferred to the force’s Operational Support Unit and was working as a traffic officer at the time of his death.
Following his death, Chief Constable Stephen Watson said: “Matt died in the line of duty and dreadful events such as these serve to remind us of the great dangers that police officers confront every day in order to keep us all safe.“Matt’s dedication to protect the public is testament to his courage and professionalism, he was an upstanding constable and to protect us he made the ultimate sacrifice.

Hide AdHe started his career in the army and served with the Royal Military Police.
Thousands was raised in his memory after his death, with the money donated to Help for Heroes, which supports the wounded, sick and injured in the military.
