Sheffield Crown Court heard on January 28 how Carl Wynne, 36, of Harlington Court, Denaby, Doncaster, struck at a service station on Doncaster Road, at Denaby, Doncaster, about 3.30am, on December 1.
Neil Coxon, prosecuting, said the service station worker had left the garage for a cigarette and the defendant and a female entered the shop and Wynne indicated he wanted to buy cigarettes.

The worker told Wynne there was no money in the till and the defendant said he had been joking, according to Mr Coxon, but as the employee tried to press a panic button the defendant became agitated.
Mr Coxon said a confrontation followed between the two of them before the worker escaped and alcohol and cigarettes valued at over £900 were stolen but Wynne was identified from CCTV footage.
Wynne, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to the theft and the assault and the court heard he had subsequently breached a community order, a suspended prison sentence and a conditional discharge order.

He added that the complainant described the confrontation as a “tussle”.
Judge Peter Kelson QC sentenced Wynne to 40 weeks of custody.
