More than 350 vehicles stopped by police on Sheffield road during lockdown

Officers were stationed on Abbeydale Road on Wednesday to check whether or not drivers were making essential journeys, as defined by the government’s lockdown rules which are enforced by new laws giving police the power to fine and even arrest those in breach.
Despite stopping nearly 400 motorists, police said no fines were issued to drivers.

Hide AdIn the last few weeks officers have been spotted on several busy roads in the city - including Penistone Road and Sheaf Street – pulling vehicles over to enquire about the nature of their journeys.
On Thursday a police helicopter was used to try and find one motorist who failed to stop for police. The force also revealed they stopped a man who had travelled from Huddersfield to Sheffield to visit family.
