'¦But not of it
With regard to Margaret Horne, (Letters, March 7), I did not go through the Second World War but I very much doubt that anyone who did so was fighting for a federal Europe.
As to Winston Churchill being an arch federalist he did express the desire that Europe might come together but he did not see the United Kingdom as being part of that process.
He made his view very clear when he famously said ‘We are with Europe but not of it’.

Hide AdActions speaking louder than words could I also point out that as leader of the Conversative Party Churchill opposed applications to join the European Coal and Steel Community from whence the EU came.
