Police swoop on Sheffield funeral over social distancing concerns

Officers were notified of the gathering at Shiregreen Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon (January 26) at around 3pm.
Under current Government rules, funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people during the national lockdown.

Hide AdBut a picture of the scene sent in by a Sheffield Star reader appears to show more than 30 people gathered at the site.
The reader told us: “I was appalled to see that social distancing wasn't being observed at Shiregreen Cemetery. And people wonder why we still have high rates in Sheffield.”
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police confirmed police had been in attendance, adding: “Officers attended and swiftly dispersed the group who had gathered to witness a private funeral service.
“Enquiries are ongoing to identify the organiser and take appropriate enforcement action.”
