Logging the lockdown miles to raise charity cash in Sheffield

Helping to keep folk fit and healthy, the club is asking people to sign up and help to clock up miles in any way they can during lockdown.
Spokesman Andy Woffinen explained: “We’ve got support from walkers and cyclists too, and what we’re saying is go for a run, walk or ride and log how many miles you do in one hour, and let’s go as far as we can.”Andy was inspired by fellow Yorkshireman Colonel Tom Moore’s efforts to walk for NHS charities, and Stride for Sheffield will be inviting participants to raise money or make donations for charities helping local food banks and the Cathedral Archer Project, which supports homeless people. The challenge is open to anyone, not just members of local running or cycling clubs, said Andy. “We’re doing this for Sheffield,” he said. “We want to bring people of the city together, and we want to support these local charities because we know there are people struggling here at the best of times, never mind these extraordinary times we’re in now.”Anyone in Sheffield can sign on at: https://tinyurl.com/strideforsheffield - the idea initially was to log your miles travelled in one hour (running, walking, cycling or even doing indoor exercise on a treadmill) for one exercise session every week. Now organisers will be looking at extending the time limit this Wednesday to allow longer runs, walks and rides following the new government guidance.People can do their session alone or in a household, according to usual social distancing guidelines.“So if I go out with my wife and daughter, and dog, and we go for 4 miles we’ll each log our miles and we’ll have done 16 between us,” said Andy. “Yes, dogs can log their miles too. We’re expecting some competition between people, and between dogs.” Spreadsheet wizards from Steel City Striders will be updating the total travelled, with regular updates of how far Sheffield (and its dogs) has travelled around the world.Up to now a total of over 1,500 miles has been covered, raising over £1,000.See: https://www.steelcitystriders.co.uk/2020/stride-for-sheffield/
