The sound of clapping rang out across the nation at 8pm, as a sign of appreciation for everyone going above and beyond to care for people during the pandemic.
Known as the ‘Clap for our Carers’ campaign, the syncronised round of applause was aimed at recognising the efforts of doctors, nurses, carers, GPs, pharmacists and other NHS workers and social care staff on the frontline in the battle against Covid-19.

Like people singing together from balconies in Italy, the round of applause demonstrated that it is still possible to be united while adhering to the social-distacning rules aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday, March 23 that it was necessary for the country to go into lockdown, with people only allowed to leave their house to travel to an essential job, to pick up essential shopping or help vulnerable people, to take exercise or travel for medical reasons.
Eight people in Sheffield have died of the coronavirus so far, with half of those deaths taking place over the last 24 hours.
The latest figures from Public Health England stated there are 240 confirmed cases in the city.
