Sheffield Council has asked residents to wash their hands before and after moving their bins, and to wipe the bin handles with soap and water, sanitiser or bleach, obviously taking care to protect their hands if using the latter.
They are advised to do this both when putting their bins out for collection and when bringing them back in.

Hide AdGillian Charters, the council’s head of waste management and highway maintenance, said this advice was just part of efforts to protect refuse collectors from infection as they continue to work at this challenging time.
“The health and safety of our staff, including those working for our partners such as Veolia, is always our number one priority. Teams delivering waste services are recognised as key workers by the Government and as such will continue to operate across the city,” she said.
“In order to maintain a safe working environment Veolia have provided full guidance and training to their workforce in line with Government and industry guidelines. Personal protective equipment is made available on a daily basis.”
Green waste collections have already been suspended and although the city’s waste and recycling centres remain open, limits have been placed on the number of cars able to enter at any one time and people have been advised to only use them if absolutely necessary.

Hide AdSheffield Council has warned that police are issuing fines to anyone caught making a non-essential visit and that if people do not follow the guidance dumps may be forced to close.
Household waste and recycling collections are currently continuing as normal, but the council has warned that this may change due to the pressures it is facing.
Veolia says that the collection calendars delivered to people’s homes are now out of date but it has decided not to issue new ones for the time being due to the likely impact of coronavirus on services.
For now, people can check their collection days at www.veolia.co.uk/sheffield/collections/collection-day-finder.
