In a speech to the nation, Mr Johnson said the virus is the “biggest threat this country has faced for decades”.
“The time has now come for us all to do more. You must stay at home,” he said.

Hide AdPeople will not be allowed to leave their home for anything other than shopping for essential goods “as infrequently as possible”, one form of exercise a day – alone or with members of their household – or if there is a medical need, or for travelling to and from work only where this is “absolutely necessary”.
Police will have powers to enforce the rules. All shops selling non-essential goods will be closed.
It comes as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Sheffield rose to 106 from Sunday to Monday
The measures will remain in place for at least three weeks.
