The Grind was opened in 2010 by Howard and Amanda Wade on Green Lane on the ground floor of Cornwall Works, a former silversmiths. The glass-fronted venue – which underwent a refurbishment two years ago – had an informal atmosphere, offering a changing menu of specials and colourful salads as well as high-quality cakes and coffee.
The café’s meaty sausage rolls, meanwhile, were so beloved that Arctic Monkeys ordered a vast quantity of them for their homecoming gig at the Don Valley Bowl in 2011.

“The current situation has given us an opportunity to reflect on our work/family time balance and so sadly we have decided that our time at The Grind Café has come to an end but someone else’s journey may be about to begin,” they explained in a statement on The Grind’s Facebook page.
“We opened The Grind in December 2010 in an emerging Kelham Island and over the years we are very proud to have been part of the regeneration of the area and have built up a superb reputation for amazing food and atmosphere which could not have been done without our great staff and loyal customers.
“It is therefore with regret that Amanda and I will not be reopening The Grind. But this doesn’t need to be the end of the story.

“We have loved our journey with The Grind and are sure that future owners will also.”

The café is the latest well-known Sheffield spot to confirm it will not be reopening under its current ownership. Last week Abbeydale Brewery said it would not be bringing back its city centre pub The Devonshire Cat after lockdown.
